The illustrations of dager jeg har glemt (part4)

Part4 - Finding a routine

The fun part! Ok, so now we have the main characters set, the visual style is set and i have the storyboard to guide me through + 1 page already completed so i started in the middle of the book. Why not chronological? Well, sometimes when i start i´m still a little uncertain of the outcome. The drawings tend to get better the more you do them and i didn't want to start with a bad drawing so i started in the middle and jumped from page to page. This way it balanced everything out (or at least in my head it did).

Left: A directly scanned drawing. Right: After brightness and contrast adjustment.

After 4-5 drawings i had established a pretty good routine and gotten a rough clue on how long it takes to do 1 drawing. In this case it took me more or less 1 hour to finish one. This was extremely important for me to find out as i worked during the evenings after work (didn't have time to draw at work). So on a good evening i could have about 2 drawings done. The day after  i would scan these and do some post-production. I would also lure my friends at work to pose for me. In the evenings my girlfriend would pose. My routine was something like this:

1.Printing out the reference and sketch it onto the paper.
2.Use the light-table trying to clean-up my rough sketch.
3. Scan in the page making sure i have the right format and that the text will fit.
4. Adjusting the pictures brightness and contrast.
5. Doing some
minor touch-ups (mistakes I've done) and making sure it looks good flipped.
6.Creating a lowres version and send it to the author and editor for approval.

After a drawing was approved i marked the panel in the storyboard with a colored marker to get an idea on how much work was left. At this point i knew that each drawing took around 1 hour to do so if there was 36 panels unmarked i would know that i had roughly 36-40 hours of work left.

Blue panels shows which pages that has been completed and approved.

Ok, so after completing a considerate amount of drawings scattered them around on the floor in order to look through everything. Is there any drawing that sticks out too much from the rest? Too much black on a majority of them? I think it's important to take a step back once in a while to overlook everything.
Have to mention that there were days that i didn't draw at all. Sometimes there are things that comes in the way so it's always good to throw in a little little buffer of time into the planning stage.
